Hungary has been making wine for over 2,000 years. The Romans cultivated vines here before the Magyar tribes arrived in 896 AD, and the Benedictine monks of Pannonhalma have been tending their vineyards since 996 AD — over a millennium of unbroken tradition.
Tokaji Aszú — the 'Wine of Kings' — graced the tables of Louis XIV of France, Peter the Great of Russia, and Frederick the Great of Prussia. Villány's Bordeaux-style reds have outperformed Château Pétrus in blind tastings. Yet Hungary remains one of the world's great undiscovered wine secrets.
